During his closing talk at the 188th Semiannual General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans for the construction of the Praia Cabo Verde Temple on October 7, 2018. In recent years, Church membership has grown significantly on the islands of Cabo Verde, located approximately 350 miles off the northwest coast of Africa. The are some 14,700 Latter-day Saints in the country organized into three stakes and two districts. A temple in Praia will make the sacred ordinances of the temple an attainable blessing for Church members who currently must fly to the Madrid Spain Temple.

The Praia Cabo Verde Temple will be the first temple built in Cabo Verde. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Praia Cabo Verde Temple was held on the same day as the groundbreaking ceremonies for the San Juan Puerto Rico Temple and Yigo Guam Temple.
