• FKA: Orem Utah West Central Stake (1977)

Stake History[]

New Stake Creation[]

On 18 September 1977 this stake was created and was formerly known at the time as Orem Utah West Central Stake. Sometime Later the name was changed to Orem Utah Suncrest Stake.

The first stake president was James E Mangum (1927-2017). He grew up in Huntington, Utah. He served in the U.S. Navy in the final months of World War II. He and Shirley brought their young family to Orem, Utah, in 1953, and made it their home. He taught school at Geneva Elementary, Lincoln and Orem High Schools where he was regularly voted “most popular teacher” by the students. He left teaching, a profession he loved, to expand his plumbing contracting business to better support his growing family.

His life was one of service; to family, community and church. He served as Mayor of Orem City for 10 years overseeing the coming of University Mall and the construction of the City Hall and Recreation Center. His church service included bishop of the Orem 3rd Ward, stake president of the Orem West Stake, counselor to two presidents at the Provo MTC, first president of the Arizona Tucson Mission (1990-1993), and missions at the Toronto Temple and the Nauvoo Temple. He served as a sealer in the Mount Timpanogos Temple until his health prevented it.

Provo Utah Temple[]

The Provo Utah Temple is the 15th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Located in the city of Provo, Utah, it was built with a modern single-spire design, similar to the original design of the Ogden Utah Temple. Located on Provo's east bench near the mouth of magnificent Rock Canyon, the Provo Utah Temple claims a stunning backdrop of towering mountains. The extensive temple grounds are decorated with a cascading water feature and numerous flowers, shrubs, and trees. Across the street is the Missionary Training Center (MTC) where thousands of young missionaries reside year round preparing for missionary service around the world. The campus of Church-owned Brigham Young University (BYU) borders the temple to the southwest.
